Primm's Game Collection Reviews

Banner Image
Welcome to my page where I rate the video games that I have in my (admittedly small) collection.
Here's a short outline on the categories that I will use to rate my collection.

The first section reflects my views on the software itself:
Enjoyability: How much fun I had when playing. Yes it is heavily subjective and depends on whether I like the genre of the game.
Length: Usually higher the longer the game is, but if the game becomes tedious it may be docked points.
Mods/support: How many mods are available for the game.
AV (Audio/Visual): The quality of the soundtrack and artstyle.
Story: How moved I felt by the story.

And the second section reflects the physical aspects of the game that I own:
Rarity: How hard the game is to find.
Price: How much money I paid for it, on a scale of not very much to a lot.
Condition: How like-new the game and case are.

Overall: Often the average of all other ratings but may be different depending on other factors.

I bought this game on a whim when I saw a review of the game and thought it looked cool. I then played Secret of Mana and never looked back. The review is mainly based on both Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana, as the first entry in the series lacks the substance of the other games, being a Game Boy game. My full review of Secret of Mana can be found here. This game is also the first release of the official English translation of Trials of Mana, 24 years after it was released in Japan. Therefore I think this collection is the perfect way to experience two fantastic SNES action RPGs with a lovely story and characters.

Okay this isn't really a 'game' per se, but it's still in my game collection so it counts. This application is a collection of micro-activities to help maintain or improve your cognitive function. I found it pretty fun to pick up every day and try to get a high score in different activities, with my favourite training activity by far being the calculations! Interestingly, this game hasn't had a release in American territories, which makes this slightly rarer overall in my eyes. I think this is a great game to get if you enjoy doing brainteasers, and also are able to stick to a routine of playing it near-daily.

I got this game after watching a couple of playthroughs of it and thinking it looked really cute, and it really does!! A Hat in Time has great controls and overall well made levels, which makes travelling the world really fun, especially when you've fully mastered the controls. In addition, this release came with the game's DLC, which adds an extra level and a devilishly hard challenge mode. I loved this immensely as I could just boot the game up and practice another challenge every once in a while. The game is also very well written with lovable characters and events, which I think is where the game really differs from similar 3D platformers, as it never takes itself seriously. I think this game is amazing if you want a silly, non-stressful game that can also be difficult should you wish it!

Breath of the Wild is often described as a masterpiece and I have to wholeheartedly agree. I've spent hundreds of hours just messing about in the wide open world, seeing what I could push the physics engine to do. The story is fine and lays out the setting of the game well, but it isn't particularly deep (which is something I'm hoping the sequel will fix). But overall the game is splendid and is the first game that I ever felt gave me a true yet fair challenge.

This long anticipated sequel to BotW is a fabulous game. In a similar vein to Super Mario Galaxy 2, this came out of the developers' great number of ideas for DLC, enough to make a whole new game. TotK builds upon the mechanics of the previous game splendidly, making combat, quests, and simply travelling through the world even more enjoyable (Master Cycle Zero notwithstanding)! And although I feel that the sense of peril in this game is lessened slightly, exploration has been cranked to even greater heights. In addition, the developers have certainly put more work into the story, something I wished the first game had more of. Currently, mods for the game are limited in scope (the game even broke many mod loaders from the sheer number of asset files it has) but hopefully some impressive custom maps can be developed in the near future.

At the end of the day, I'd still recommend Breath of the Wild first to someone looking for an open world Zelda game on Switch, but TotK is a definitely new breath of life for those who had already had their fill of previous Hyrules.

This is the first GameCube game that I bought separately, after deciding that I really needed to try out a 'traditional' 3D Zelda game at some point. Wind Waker did not dissapoint, having engaging gameplay (I never found the sailing mechanic tedious) and wonderful cartoony visuals that still stand up well today. In addition, the game was also sold with a copy of Ocarina of Time and its unreleased expansion, Ura Zelda (titled Master Quest). This makes the game very good value for money if you're interested in 3D Zelda Games

This series is often regarded as a bunch simple minigame collection, but in the case of this 2012 installment, I think it goes a bit further than most people give it credit for. Although most of my impressions of the game are from when I was younger, I think this game works brilliantly on the Wii. It's a more party-like extension of Wii Sports, presenting multiplayer in a much more engaging fashion. Also, I find that many of the dream events are engaging enough to be played singleplayer, meaning I've certainly put many hours into this game over the years, although looking back at the game now, there's not much to entice me to play it again.

I got this game when I bought my GameCube and I'm glad that I did because who doesn't like a good Mario Kart game? But compared to other games in the series (Wii & 8), it lacks solid gameplay and a large modded catalogue, despite its interesting and strategic gimmick. And although it has an arguably superior battle mode, the game feels a lot less multiplayer oriented than later entries in the series.

As the base game alone, Mario Kart Wii is a solid Mario Kart game, with very tight controls and fun multiplayer gameplay. However the game can feel very short and lacking in content, especially with the shutdown of online. This is where the modding scene really shines, with tonnes of new courses and a ressurected online. I've spent loads of time playing custom tracks online and its really fun to play a few rounds of occasionally, if you can find a lobby where not everyone is playing perfectly. So if you have the few hours to spare to mod your Wii or WiiU, it is well worth getting.

This game was a major part of my childhood, and as such, I have a strong fondness for this game with its simple gameplay and cute sound design. In addition, this was the game that I first learnt how to mod, and still do to this day! So partly due to nostalgia, and partly due to me still playing it regularly, this game is in my top 5 favourites of all time!!

The Paper Mario community is quite divided on this game, as on one hand, it tries to return to the series' roots by having partners and a more traditional RPG battle system, however it lacks the depth of story and character of the first 3 games. I have to agree with this, as I don't think it stands up to the likes of The Thousand-Year Door. However when considered on its own, I find it an an enjoyable enough game with some memorable moments and a good enough battle system. I would say that if you really want to experience what Paper Mario is like and only own a switch, you should definitely go for this game. However if at all possible, consider playing the first 2 games, as they are much more enjoyable and encapsulate all that the series is about.

I got this game after having played and loved Paper Mario 64 and hearing about how this game is a classic. It certainly did not disappoint, being a totally charming RPG with witty writing and unique characters. In addition, I found that chapters that people tend to find tedious were still incredibly enjoyable, and the overarching story is wonderful and engaging.

My first 3 Pokémon games were all ones from the Switch, and out of those, I would think to go back to this one the most. Legends Arceus is a new spin on the old Pokémon formula, and as a result feels fresh and exciting, even if the visuals are at the usual poor quality from the generation. The more action oriented gameplay lends itself far better to 3D environments than the classic RPG style, making it a lot easier to remain engaged. I even took the time to max out the Pokédex!! I think this is definitely the game to play if a previous Pokémon game has turned you off in the past but you want to give the series another shot.

I bought Splatoon 2 one day on a whim and it definitely paid off. As of the time of writing, I have over 300 hours in the game, which is more than I have in any other. I had no idea if I'd like the game, but the fast paced nature of the battles and the fleshed out world & music hooked me! The DLC for the game is also superb, being quite a challenge, something which the regular story mode lacked greatly. Obviously, Splatoon 3 has superceeded the game in many aspects, but I think this game would still be a good buy for cheap, just for the singleplayer alone, especially if you like other entries in the series.

As someone who's a fan of 2D Mario games, especially the New Super Mario Bros. series, I was super excited for the release of Wonder! The visuals looked bright and exciting, with loads of new enemies, powerups, playable characters, and gameplay styles. And after getting my hands on it, it was an absolute joy to play, with almost everything exactly how I wanted! My first playthrough felt like playing Super Mario World for the first time, with all the surprises and secrets intact. Additionally, modding for the game seems to be coming along strong and I'm certainly interested in making my own set of levels at some point. This game really felt engaging all the way through, placing itself among the top games in the 2D Mario series, and I do hope that the creativity introduced here can flow into other future Mario games as well!

This was my first 3D Mario game and I found it super fun. The controls are fantastic and incredibly versatile, having a high skill ceiling but being easy to learn a few simple moves. The story is also better than most Mario games' (which isn't saying much) but it's nice to have a couple new characters in the series. The locales are also varied and incredibly nice just to run around and explore. Overall I found this game incredibly enjoyable and I think it was one of the best games to be my first 3D platformer.

I used to play this game all the time with friends and family. Its the perfect fun and lighthearted party game and is accessible to almost anyone who can shake a wiimote! There's also a small singleplayer offering, as well as freeplay for all the minigames included, leading to a decent amount of content overall, adding on to to the great replayability of the game. For a fun minigame themed party game for the Wii, I don't think you can do better than Wii Party!

One of the all-time classic pack-in games. Wii Sports is essentially a tech demo for everything that the original Wiimotes can do, and it does it well. Bowling and golf are especially fun to play with friends and family. My only issue with this game is that it has little replay value, and nowadays it's greatly overshadowed by its fantastic sequel: Wii Sports Resort.

Wii Sports Resort is a fantastic sequel to an already iconic game. This game takes the steps that its predecessor took and absolutely runs with it, bumping the number of included games from 5 to 12, and fleshes each game out by adding sub-games and achievements. It even works great as a party game, allowing for some really fun competition (especially with the Swordplay Duel game)! Although I have to admit that nothing beats the singleplayer Island Flyover game in my books, as Wuhu Island is a fantastic setting and it's really fun to be able to explore it in your own time.
In short, this game is a massive step up from the original, and I would highly recommend anyone to pick this one up first, if given the choice!!
